Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard and Navy have rescued eight people, including seven women and one child, during a joint operation in the remote Baharchhara hills of Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
Lieutenant Commander Syam-ul-Hoque, media officer of the Bangladesh Coast Guard, confirmed the rescue on Wednesday morning.
According to officials, intelligence reports had indicated that several individuals, including women and children, were being held captive in the Baharchhara hills with the intention of trafficking them to Malaysia by sea. Acting on this information, the joint forces carried out an operation in the Jumma Para hill area between 5:00pm and 7:00pm on Tuesday.
During the raid, eight captives were freed. However, the traffickers managed to escape after detecting the presence of the security forces, leaving no arrests made.
Authorities said surveillance and intelligence-driven operations will continue in order to identify and apprehend those involved in the trafficking network.
