Launch services on 11 routes connecting Bhola with different coastal areas were suspended on Thursday as rough weather, caused by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, disrupted movement.
Rainfall began in Barishal on Wednesday night and continued until Thursday afternoon, leaving several city roads waterlogged. Office-goers and day labourers faced significant difficulties reaching their destinations.
Md Humayun Kabir, a meteorological observer at the Barishal Met Office, said the combination of the low-pressure system and seasonal monsoon winds led to cloudy conditions and persistent rainfall. Barishal recorded 24.2mm of rain over 24 hours, with 14.2mm falling between 6am and noon on Thursday.
According to Md Shahidul Alam, an official at Bhola River Port, passenger launches on 11 routes, including those to Sandwip, Hatiya, and Lakshmipur, were suspended from the morning. Speedboat operations were also halted.
Similarly, launch services from Bhola to Barguna and Patuakhali were suspended due to the adverse weather conditions.
